Now a cornerstone of Design Week, stylish Brera is the most central and arguably the most exciting of the Fuorisalone circuits in 2012. No missing it, just north of Piazza Duomo and festooned all in red with flags, showroom signs, and infoboards created by Alulife. With the marketing drive of Brera Design District and powerful partners and sponsors, the list of over 50 showrooms reads like a Who’s Who of contemporary design, and roughly 90 events will tempt you into modish locations around the area from Tuesday 17th through to Sunday 22nd April.
One of the main sponsors, Hyundai is launching its Creative Lab project here, a platform for international design competitions, with the results of its first invitation to graphics studios on the theme New Thinking, New Possibilities, and a new call, during Design Week, to create an app for sustainable mobility.
Valcucine, meanwhile, is offering showroom space (in Corso Garibaldi 99) to small ethical and environmentalist operations while promoting a brand of its own, demode. They’re all there to repair, recycle, reuse and renew your old stuff, from broken furniture to unwanted clothing, rusting bicycles to catering left-overs! This is a must.
Vivere alla Ponti – The Houses Inhabited by Giò Ponti - is one of a multitude of cultural events promoted by the District: an exhibition illustrating Giò Ponti’s experiments with domestic living and working spaces, curated by designer Francesca Molteni (ubiquitous during Design Week) with the help of the Giò Ponti Archives and Milan’s Ordine degli Architetti, and held at the Order’s HQ in Via Solferino 19.
Design Mood is a brilliant new digital idea from furnishing company Cesare Roversi. They’ll produce simple, functional designs proffered by young creatives and display them for sale through the Design Mood site, which goes online on April 17 with the first designs realized: a virtual event, this. The concept is to make high quality furnishings at low prices, involve emerging designers in the production process, and reward their efforts with royalties amounting to 10% of each sale.
If there are any dominant themes among all that’s going on in Brera 2012, they are perhaps sustainable design, anything green, and art. The culminating overall event is Brera Design Night on Friday 20th, with some locations staying open late and the grand Fuorisalone Design Party by Hyundai at the Officine del Volo in Via Mecenate 76.
The Fuorisalone isn’t just Brera, of course: Design Week fever is high all over town with don’t-miss venues and events in the other big circuits - Tortona (personal favourite), Porta Romana, Porta Venezia, Mecenate and Ventura Lambrate. See the Fuorisalone site for all the details.
Less than a week to go!
